Feeling a bit adventurous and wooed by the promise of a habanero-cherry flavor combination, I decided to pick up a gluten-free Epic Beef Bar to try out.
I love beef jerky, so how far can this be from what I usually eat?
With my partner in food-crime by my side (my brother), we halved the bar and sampled at the same time. Usually, we’ll claw each other over a Cherry Pie Larabar, but there was no blood shed over this protein bar…
The Texture
The texture of food can make or break my taste experience, and the likeability of a new product. The ‘beef bar’ was a little too soft and moist for my personal preference. I expected something a tad harder in texture.
The Ingredients + the Taste
One of the reasons I bought the bar in the first place was for its minimal number of ingredients: organic grass-fed beef, walnuts, dried cherries, salt, celery powder, fine black pepper, and crushed habanero. Honestly, I didn’t really taste the walnuts, cherry, or habanero. I just tasted meat…a smoky, soft meat bar with a hint of sweetness.
I will say that the beef bar wasn’t a total disappointment…it isn’t what I would describe as nasty…we just won’t be buying another any time soon – not really our thing.

Epic is a brand of grass-fed protein bars that also come in a Currant + Mint Lamb Bar; Almond + Cranberry Turkey Bar; and a Bacon + Cranberry Bison Bar. I won’t be trying any of these…if beef didn’t do it for me…I highly doubt bison, lamb, and turkey will.
