So, you know I had to try out the new ‘diet’ fries from Burger King, which they say are made ‘with a coating designed to be less porous and absorb less oil,’ which reduces fat by 40 percent and calories by 30 percent’ – when compared to McDonald’s fries.
I first read about the new fries a couple of days ago (and was under the impression it would take a bit of time to reach the market), but yesterday night was the first time I heard the commercial…and sure enough, the local Burger King was advertising the fries on their front door this morning.
How Stupid I Felt Saying the Word ‘Satisfries’
All last night, I pondered the naming of the fries. While ‘Satisfries’ sounds quite clever on paper, it’s actually a marketing dud, in my opinion. For starters, if you want men to purchase these fries, I can’t see them saying ‘Satisfries,’ and when I went into Burger King today, I tried to nonchalantly insert an order for two ‘Satisfries’ in between a couple of burgers, and was met with a giggle. The cashier replied, ‘I don’t know why they just can’t call them ‘crinkle cut’ fries.’
That’s a very good point. I think Burger King would have been much better off just marketing a new crinkle-cut fry with fewer calories and less fat. There are no crinkle-cut fries served at their closest competitors. One thing is for sure…I will not refer to them as ‘Satisfries’ again. I think I’ll just call them ‘the new fries,’ or if they last, ‘the crinkle cut fries.’
The Taste
I received piping hot Satisfries with a decent sprinkling of salt (no overkill, which is what I like). They have a very nice crisp to them, did not get soggy, and tasted more ‘potatoey.’ The fries are actually the product of a collaboration between McCain Foods and Burger King, which took two years to develop. It’s not the first time a fry like this has been made… it’s just the first time I’ve tried one. I liked the taste, and would eat them again. Also, they are NOT greasy at all – nothing even gets on your hands, except for the salt.
The Price
A small serving of Satisfries is $1.99, and I didn’t even pay attention to the other prices for a medium or large portion because I only wanted to try them out the cheapest way possible.
Have you tried the fries and what do you think about them?
